VIRGINIA BEACH—Ken Cuccinelli and Steve Shannon share many similarities. Both represent Northern Virginia in the General Assembly. In fact, Cuccinelli’s Senate district overlaps Shannon’s House district in three precincts. Both are making their first statewide run for office at a young age – Cuccinelli is 40, Shannon 38. Both attended Gonzaga High School in Fairfax County, overlapping there by one year.
Both are Wahoos. Cuccinelli earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia; Shannon attended the U.Va. law school. Both are Roman Catholics. Both profess that they are friends. Both want to be attorney general of Virginia.
And that’s where the similarities may end.
VirginiaFREE's 2009 Legislator ratings have been released, and the outcome is clear: Steve Shannon is the pro-business candidate for Attorney General.
Steve Shannon has worked with Governor Warner and Governor Kaine to bring strong financial management to the Commonwealth, leading Virginia to be named the Best Managed State and the Best State for Business.
In 1999, Steve Shannon helped lead the effort to create Northern Virginia’s AMBER Alert system to help rescue abducted children. He and his wife Abby brought together law enforcement, media and community groups throughout Virginia to develop the communication systems, protocol and technologies to respond quickly when a child is reported missing.
